Muslim friends, just stop and think for a second. Laylatul Qadr is the Night of Power — the night the Quran was sent down, better than a thousand months, when angels descend and everything is peaceful until dawn. It is supposed to be the most blessed night of the year. But the hadiths cannot even agree on when it happens in Ramadan. The most authentic books — Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim — give completely different dates. Some say last 7 nights, some say last 10 nights, some say only the 27th, some say the Prophet himself forgot the date, and Shia hadiths point to 19th, 21st or 23rd.
These are not weak stories. These are from the Sahih Sittah (the six most trusted Sunni books) and classical Shia sources. If you follow one hadith, you will almost certainly miss the real night according to the others. How is this possible for the most important night in Islam? Let’s look at the exact hadiths under clear headings so you can see the contradictions yourself.
Last 7 Nights
English: Narrated Ibn `Umar: Some men amongst the companions of the Prophet (ﷺ) were shown in their dreams that the night of Qadr was in the last seven nights of Ramadan. Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said, “It seems that all your dreams agree that (the Night of Qadr) is in the last seven nights, and whoever wants to search for it should search in the last seven (nights of Ramadan).”
Last 10 Nights
English: Narrated Aisha: Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) used to practice Itikaf in the last ten nights of Ramadan and used to say, “Look for the Night of Qadr in the last ten nights of the month of Ramadan.”
Sahih Muslim 1165d (Sahih) English: “So seek it in the last ten (nights).”
Odd Nights in the Last 10 Days
English: Narrated `Aisha: Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said, “Search for the Night of Qadr in the odd nights of the last ten days of Ramadan.”
The Prophet Himself Forgot the Exact Night
Sahih al-Bukhari 2018 (Sahih) English: “I have verily been shown (the date of) this Night (of Qadr) but I have forgotten it. So search for it in the odd nights of the last ten days…”
Sahih al-Bukhari 2036 (Sahih) English: “I was informed (of the date) of the Night of Qadr (in my dream) but had forgotten it. So, look for it in the odd nights of the last ten nights...”
Specific Single Nights
24th Night (according to Ibn Abbas) Sahih al-Bukhari 2022 (Sahih) English: Narrated Ibn Abbas: Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said, “The Night of Qadr is in the last ten nights of the month (Ramadan), either on the first nine or in the last (remaining) seven nights (of Ramadan).” Ibn Abbas added, “Search for it on the twenty-fourth (of Ramadan).”
Here’s the issue inside this one hadith: The Prophet is quoted saying it’s in the last ten, specifically “in the first nine” (of the last ten) or “in the last seven” (remaining). But then Ibn Abbas adds to search specifically on the 24th.
25th, 27th or 29th Night Sahih al-Bukhari 2023 (Sahih) English: Narrated ‘Ubada bin As-Samit: The Prophet (ﷺ) came out to inform us about the Night of Qadr but two Muslims were quarreling… So the Prophet (ﷺ) said, “… the news about it had been taken away… so search for it on the 29th, 27th and 25th (of Ramadan).”
Only the 27th Night Sunan Abi Dawud 1386 (Sahih according to Al-Albani) English: Narrated Mu’awiyah b. Abi Sufyan: The Prophet (ﷺ) said: “Lailat al-Qadr is the twenty-seventh night (of Ramadan).”
Shia Hadiths – Completely Different Nights (19th, 21st and 23rd)
Al-Kafi by Shaykh al-Kulayni, Vol. 4, p. 158 (Classical Shia hadith collection, considered authentic in Shia tradition) Narrated from Imam Ja’far al-Sadiq (AS): “Measurement and determination is on the night of the nineteenth, verification is on the twenty-first night and final approval is on the twenty-third night.” Link: Reference cited on Ziarat Planner (Al-Kafi Vol. 4, p. 158)
Classical narration from Imam Ja’far al-Sadiq (AS) in Amal-i-Shahr-i-Ramadhan “No. By God it is not but in the nineteenth, twenty-first, and the twenty-third night of the month of Ramadhan… on the twenty-third night what God the Exalted approves is signed. That is the Night of Destiny…” Link: Duas.org – Full narration from Imam Abu Abdullah (Imam Sadiq)
Dear Muslim reader, think with simple logic
If you follow “last 7 nights” (Bukhari 2015) but the real night is the 25th, 27th, 29th (Bukhari 2023) or the 19th/21st/23rd (Shia), you missed it completely. If you pick only the 27th (Abu Dawood 1386), you miss everything else. If you search only in the first 10 or odd nights of last 10, you still lose according to the other reports. The Prophet himself said he was shown the night but forgot it (Sahih Bukhari multiple times). Then two companions quarreled and Allah “took away” the knowledge (Bukhari 2023).
How can the most authentic hadiths contradict each other so badly on the single most important night of the year? A real divine message would not leave Muslims so confused.
Which hadith are you going to follow this Ramadan? And if you pick the wrong one, you miss the night that is better than 1000 months.
Think honestly, Muslim friend — doesn’t this look like ordinary human confusion and different stories rather than perfect guidance from Allah? What do you think?
